Ideal for those leading busy stressful lives, this deeply relaxing and calming massage can be administered in as little as 20 minutes, if necessary. For this type of massage the client can remain clothed. In addition to the head, the upper back, arms, shoulders neck and face are all treated. The client is comfortably seated and their head/neck supported as necessary.

‘This treatment is guaranteed to relieve the stresses of daily life and provide a real cure for those aching, tense neck and shoulder muscles.’
(from ‘The Art of Indian Head Massage, by N. Mehta)

History Ayurvedic texts from nearly 4,000 years ago indicate that massage used in conjunction with herbs, spices and aromatic oils was an integral part of Indian family life and IHM springs from this long tradition. IHM was originally used by women who believed that regularly massaging their heads with seasonal vegetable and essential oils would keep their long hair strong and healthy. They were right; IHM stimulates the blood flow to the hair follicles thus supplying the nutrients and oxygen to improve hair growth. This original form was restricted to the head and hair, but was not confined to women, barbers practised similar skills, including IHM as part of routine hair cutting. IHM given by barbers was intended primarily to refresh and invigorate the individual rather than care for the hair. The traditions of IHM have been handed down through the generations and have evolved in the latter part of the 20th Century as they were introduced to the West.

Narendra Mehta introduced IHM to this country in the early 1980’s, and has since developed it to include massage of the back, shoulders, face and ears, as well as the head and neck. In accordance with Ayurvedic tradition IHM combines physical massage with a more subtle form of massage, which affects a person’s energy centres. The flow of energy around the body and through these centres is believed to have a profound effect on a person’s well-being.

Research

Research is being carried out into the effects of IHM on problems, which prevail in our modern society, such as drug addiction, depression, insomnia, headaches and migraines, and other stress related disorders.
